Past Commander David Warren Ware, Jr Obituary

Bridget M. Grimes, age 14, was employed along with many other young children in Department 6 of the Confederate States Laboratory on Brown's Island, Richmond, Virginia.  The laboratory manufactured breech loading and pistol ammunition for the military.  On March 13, 1863, a huge explosion tore 100 feet of the building down and a huge fire engulfed the scene.  The initial death toll was 31 women and 2 men killed and an additional 25 women and 5 men wounded.  Most of the latter had very bad burns.  The dreadfully burned included Bridget who was taken to General Hospital #2 on Cary Street which was directly across from her home.   After 11 days of suffering Bridget died on March 23rd.  Bridget was buried in an unmarked grave, in Mt. Calvary cemetery, and her mother Barbara was buried in the same grave when she passed in 1877.   Bridget was then forgotten and when the UDC monument to the victims of the Brown's Island Explosion was placed in Oakwood Cemetery her name was not listed.  This oversight and the unmarked grave have now both been rectified in 2014.
